About Us

Since 1860, four generations of the Stodel family have been involved in one of the most renowned antiquarian businesses in the Netherlands, which also had a branch in London until 2007. Salomon Stodel Antiquités has a long tradition of furnishing the homes of the most prominent families in the Netherlands and beyond.

The company focuses on objects from the period 1580–1820, such as European porcelain and pottery up to 1890, furniture, Delft pottery, and silver.

The history of the Stodel family starts in Dordrecht, where they established their business in 1860. Their assortment mainly consisted of “old Dutch” antiques, such as copper and pewter, but especially Delftware and Oriental porcelain. These items were likely found in large quantities in Dordrecht, the oldest city in the province of Holland, and its surroundings.

The next generation moved to Amsterdam, continuing the family firm on the Zanddwarsstraat, near the Zuiderkerk. In 1936 the firm relocated to the Rokin, where it would acquire a renowned reputation in the Netherlands. In addition, the firm gained international recognition thanks to its branch in Berlin, and later in London as well. In 2014 the firm moved to its current location on the Spiegelgracht, near the Rijksmuseum.

Salomon Stodel is also one of the founders of the TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) and the National Antiques Fair de PAN, which was established in 1987.

During the second half of the last century the antique market flourished in the Netherlands and beyond. This led to a demand from a small group of Dutch antique dealers for a fair organized by and for antique dealers. This turned out to be a successful formula when the Delft Antiques Fair was established after the war.

Over the years, a variety of fairs emerged, but they often did not last long. In 1985, an agreement between Pictura and Antiquairs International, two fairs held in Maastricht, led to a joint fair in the Eurohal. This merger resulted in TEFAF, The European Fine Art Fair.

In the years around 1990, the participants of the Delft Antiques Fair merged with PAN Amsterdam, the Netherlands’ leading fair in art, antiques and design. With the exception of 2012, Salomon Stodel participated in the national fair from the very beginning up through 2019.

The company’s participation in Maastricht has been uninterrupted since 1978. TEFAF is currently the only fair in which the company takes part.
