The model of these little Delft shoes is inspired by 17th century mules or “trippen”. The Dutch name “trippen” refers to a mule with an upturned toe and was often embroidered with a decorative pattern in colorful silk or wool.
From the late 17th century onwards, different models of slippers and shoes were produced in Dutch Delftware. Possibly they were intended as wedding gifts or as a gift between lovers. This particular pair of of shoes, decorated with red and yellow flowers, is dated between 1750 and 1775 and was made in Delft.
