This pair of watercolour drawings,  illustrating a seated man and woman, are intimate in scale and demonstrate the precision and delicacy characteristic of Carré’s work.

Active in The Hague, Carré was listed as a member of the Confrerie Pictura from 1719 and developed a varied oeuvre producing miniatures, grisaille works, wall decorations, and stage designs. He is also documented as a painter of decorations for the Franse Schouwburg in The Hague, which situates his work within the context of theatrical and decorative arts of the period.

Provenance: Kunsthandel Bernard Houthakker (Rokin 98, Amsterdam), 1950’s.
