Italian maiolica ‘istoriato’ plate

Maiolica plates fully adorned with biblical, mythological, or historical scenes—as well as themes drawn from the poetry of Petrarch or Ludovico Ariosto—are known as istoriato ware.

This particular plate features the Noli me tangere scene from the New Testament. It depicts the moment when Christ appears to Mary Magdalene after his resurrection, as described in the Gospel of John (John 20:16–18), and speaks the famous words: “Do not touch me”.
